Overview
The
AFCO High-Density Network System (HDS) Enclosure is engineered specifically to address
the cooling and cable management challenges inherent to the Cisco 6509 switch.
HDS is Kool-IT enabled with N+1 on-board local Airflow Management Module (AMM),
with monitoring ratings up to 8 kW. HDS also integrates seamlessly with the Resource
Manager for remote management of power and cooling resources. AFCO’s unique design
makes the HDS enclosure equally suited for single- or multiple-enclosure applications
in both datacenters and networking closets.
HDS dimensions and clearances are designed for optimal clearances and airflow requirements
to meet Cisco’s rigorous airflow pattern specifications. The built-in side barrier
disrupts the negative cascading heat patterns, providing an optimal operating environment.
HDS with Kool-IT ensures optimal inlet temperature and optimum heat dissipation.
HDS is designed to work in both raised-floor and overhead environments. The HDS
system offers an economy of space-saving advantages over traditional racks, with
a compact footprint, the capability to house two switches in a single enclosure
and the ability to gang multiple enclosures in a row.

Additionally, HDS delivers sophisticated, built-in cable management capacity. Cabling
is run into the cable management “sidecar,” a separate compartment from where the
servers are mounted. Fiber and copper patch panels may also be mounted (vertically)
in the sidecar compartment. In addition to management and space savings, moving
cabling components out of the equipment mounting space also enhances airflow for
improved heat dissipation.
The enclosure features vertical cable management fences, which provide full- height,
pass-through areas on both sides of the cabinet. Optional cable stack spools can
be added to manage cable length and maintain optimal cable bend radius.
The enclosure is also perfect for use as a patching/cabling cabinet. It provides
easy access for cable routing through doors that are hinged to open either left
or right.
Thermal Overview
AFCO’s patented Kool-IT Advanced Equipment Enclosure
provides optimum airflow patterns designed to accommodate both servers that breathe
front to rear and switches that breathe side to side.
The Kool-IT system uses less than 10% of the total cabinet power and works with
pressurized floor or overhead diffusers with dual power fan tray for N+1 redundancy.
The temperature controller (display panel shown below) monitors potential risks
caused by excess temperatures inside the enclosure. The Airflow Management Module
(AMM) and the AMM Plus control fans, issue an audible alarm and, in conjunction
with Resource Manager, report alarm conditions to the network administrator
